Olympic Peninsula Firearms Training, LLC, aka Olypen Firearms, is a small firearms training facility on the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. We are essentially a one-man shop, however like many quality enterprises, it is not without the assistance of the owner's wife, a certified NRA Instructor in her own right. We've been helping new gun owners informally and formally for well over ten years since Steve & C. J. first began volunteering as trained NRA Range Safety Officers at a local range. It wasn't long before both of us became certified as NRA Instructors.
Along the way, Steve was bitten by the IDPA-bug. IDPA stands for the International Defensive Pistol Association; a form of pistol competition based on practical pistols & skills for self defense. As he had learned years earlier racing sailboats in San Francisco Bay, he knew that competiton improves an individual's skillset and understanding of both the dynamics of the individual and the operation of their equipment. The drive to improve his own skills, led to more formal training and focused practice. The original goal of becoming classified in all five handgun divisions in IDPA was reached in just a few months; far too easy to be a long-term goal, so he reset his goal to becoming qualified as Expert in all five handgun divisions. The new goal raised a few eyebrows as no one at the gun club had qualified as Expert in any division, much less all five. With a lot of hard work, highly focused practice & training on his skills, that goal was reached in 2017. Since then, Steve has raised the bar and is currently classified as Master in three of the current six handgun divisions. In addition to IDPA, Steve has participated in ICORE (International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts, USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association, and NRA Precision Pistol.
In addition to being a competitor, Steve has been quite active as an official, serving first as an IDPA Safety Officer, then qualifying as an IDPA Chief Safety Officer, and Match Director. He is also a certified Chief Range Officer in USPSA, and has officiated at numerous major matches in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and California. Working as a senior official at major matches has honed his skills at watching a shooter's hands and firearm, laser focused on safe gun handling. The opportunities to watch the best in the world gives him insight into the nuances that separate the best from the rest, which is invaluable when working with new shooters because he knows the subtleties of what he's watching. This helps him work with his students fix little things in technique that invariably make a difference.
