FAQ

Our Frequently Asked Questions. . .

bullet

How long have you been shooting?  Since I went to Army Boot Camp in 1966.

bullet

What is your favorite pistol?  The venerable 1911.  Like myself, it's been around for a long time, it's a bit fussy, but it's like an old friend that I'm very comfortable with and get along well with.

bullet

Do you recommend a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver?  I suggest that you make up your own mind.  Each has its own strengths and weaknesses; some folks prefer one over the other.  Besides talking about each in our classes, I typically give students a chance to shoot both so they can make their own decision.

bullet

How often do you teach the NRA Basic Pistol class?  Typically about 4 times a year, or by request.

bullet

Do you require students take the NRA Basic Pistol class before the CCW Class?  No. Unlike large schools that have rigid course requirements and prerequisites, I allow students to take classes in any order they choose.  However, I strongly suggest that new and novice gun owners take an entry-level class before taking an advanced class.

bullet

Why are your class sizes so small?  Most of our classes involve both classroom lecture and live fire shooting.  Large lecture classes require a large classroom, which is doable, but it drives up the cost to rent a facility.  Plus, many venues have issues with firearms and especially handling real guns in a classroom setting.  Even more importantt is that large live fire classes require several assistant instructors, which not only complicate everything, it dilutes my ability to spend quality time with each student.

bullet

Do I need to buy a gun before taking the Basic Pistol class?  No.  We have a variety of handguns that students may shoot.  Besides, taking the class first gives the student the knowledge and experience may help them make a better decision on their first gun.

bullet

Holsters.  Students are required to use a holster in our CCW (concealed carry) classes.  Students may use a holster in most classes.

bullet

Please note that holsters used in our classes:

bullet

Must fully cover the trigger guard.

bullet

Must be secured on a belt.

bullet

Must be on strong side (ie between 12 o'clock and 4 o'clock for a right-handed shooter).

bullet

Must be made of a material that does not lose its shape when the gun is removed.

bullet

Must NOT muzzle anyone, including the shooter, during the draw stroke or when holstering the firearm.

bullet

Must NOT be Blackhawk Serpa holster (or similar) requiring a button push by the trigger finger to release the holster.
